You have rights as a student that include, but are not limited to:
- A quality education
- A safe environment to learn in
- Be respected, as well as to be respectful
- A formal process to appeal unusual or extenuating circumstances and more...
If you are in a conflicted situation and you feel your rights are being violated, you have personal and institutional options:
- Try to resolve it with the individual. Talk to him/her, state your feelings and the conflict. Listen to the other person. Control your emotions. Together, agree on a solution.
- If the conflict is with another student in a classroom, ask the instructor to help resolve the issue.
If these options are not viable, fail, or do not fit the circumstance, the university has these options:
- Read the Student Conduct Code and contact the Student Conduct Code Officer at 651-793-1541 for guidance in filing a student conduct code violation.
- If the conflict is with an instructor or with a university office, call the Student Ombudsperson at 651-793-1552.
- If you feel the conflict is due to discrimination, contact the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Office at http://www.metrostate.edu/eod/index.html. This office upholds state and federal laws that protect individuals based on "...race, sex, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, disability, marital status, status in regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, or membership or activity in a local commission."
You can learn more about your rights such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and appeal processes in this module as well as the support links located just to the right of this Web page.
