What is Netiquette?

Netiquette is a term for appropriate conduct online. Although we come from different backgrounds and we have different viewpoints, it is important to treat others with respect and respond in a civil manner.

The following tips are common cyberspace courtesies:

  1. Consider carefully what you write; it's a permanent record and can be easily forwarded to others.
  1. Remember that all class participants are expected to remain polite and professional at all times. Do not post any comments that could be construed as personal remarks or attacks. Re-read and think carefully about your message before posting. Never post a message onlne that you might be hesitant to say to someone's face.
  1. Don't copy and send entire Web pages to a discussion group, just type the URLs (Web addresses) into the text.
  1. Don't overuse acronyms like BTW (by the way) or IMHO (in my humble opinion). Not everyone is experienced with this jargon, and they may not want to admit their confusion--possibly missing your point.
  1. Proofread your email before you send it. Although email is a more informal method of communication than writing a letter, be sure you make your points clear and concise. Use a spell checker if available.

Be advised that student conduct in online courses is subject to the same standards, expectations and consequences which govern student conduct in the classroom. Students who do not follow netiquette guidelines and cause disruption to the learning environment may face consequences including restriction from online discussion forums and participation and referral to the Office of Student Conduct.
